The No. 2 Foothill girls’ lacrosse team will host No. 15 Capistrano Valley in the first round of the playoffs. Game time is 5:30 pm.
What to Know About Foothill
The Knights are trying to regain the Southern Section championship they won in 2015. Foothill was 11-5 overall and 10-2 against OC teams this season while playing a demanding schedule that included all top eight seeds and tough out out of town competition. Their only OC losses were to No. 8 Tesoro and No. 1 Mater Dei. They defeated No. 3 Trabuco Hills, No. 4 St. Margaret’s, No. 5 St. Margaret’s, No. 6 Newport Harbor, No. 7 Santa Margarita along the way.
“I was really proud of our team this year,” said head coach Kate Hick by email. “We dealt with a lot of injuries and really came together as a team to win some big games. Going forward, I am really excited to see how playoffs shake out. There are some great teams out there and I think some potential upsets.”
As goes the offense, so goes the Knights. Foothill scored double digits in each of their wins and were held to about six goals per game in their losses. Seniors Emily Gaughran and Brie Ratkevich, junior Lauren Kilger, and sophomores Ava Brand and Brooke Williams provide much of the offensive output. Junior goalie Becca Nailon kept opponents to less than eight goals per game.
What to Know About Capo
The Cougars (9-8) come into the game looking for their first win against a Top 10 opponent. Don’t be surprised if Capo tries to win this one with ball control and defense. The Cougars held opponents to 8.6 goals per game and their best shot is to keep Foothill around that number. Players to watch include senior goalie Alexandria Yan, senior Shanie Scoles, senior Erica Smith, and junior Madison DeVries.
