Mater Dei girls lacrosse (11-5) will begin its Southern Section title defense as the top seed in the Orange County bracket. The Monarchs will begin their quest today against No. 16 University. Game time is 5:30 pm at Mater Dei High School.
What to Know About Mater Dei
Although the Monarchs did not finish the season undefeated like they did last year, it took out of town competition to defeat them. Their five losses came to Torrey Pines (No. 1 in San Diego), Hutchison (No. 1 Tennessee), and three teams from the Bay Area: Novato, California, and Carondolet. Of these five teams only Carondolet (8-10) lost more than two games this season. Mater Dei has not lost to an Orange County team since the 2015 semi-finals.
Players to watch? Ummmm, everybody? The Monarchs are stacked but keep an eye on their quintet of Division 1 bound seniors:Lauren Gonzales (Fresno State), Maddi Hooks (Butler), Grace Houser (Berkeley), Kenzie Wallevand (Fresno State), and Courtney Walburger (Fresno State).
What to Know About University
Uni enters the playoffs with an impressive 11-5 record and as the only team to to defeat No. 14 El Dorado this year. If the Trojans pull off the upset, expect the defense to lead the way. The Trojans allowed less than five goals per game in their 11 wins. Keep an eye on seniors Ashlyn Wang (67 goals), Honia Mohtashami (30 g), Raeann Artim (26 g), and Amanda Shubin (22 g).
