Senior middie Stanton Gilbertson scored five goals Wednesday, and Palos Verdes held No. 6 Harvard Westlake scoreless until the fourth quarter of what became a 13-2 victory for the No. 2 Sea Kings.
Junior Rizal Smith and sophomore Jack Larkin each scored two goals for PV (3-1), and freshman Jake Nolls, junior Aidan Westley, sophomore Austin Lowi and senior Zack Lozzi each had one.
Senior Roman Holthouse finally put Harvard Westlake (4-2) on the board with 10:32 left in the game, and junior middie Philip Thompson added one more with a minute left.
Throughout the game, though, the Wolverines had difficulty generating shots on goal. Palos Verdes goalie David McCann made five saves in the first half, when the Sea Kings built a 5-0 lead. Even when Harvard Westlake began shooting from distance in the third quarter, McCann wasn’t really challenged. He finished with 14 saves.
Palos Verdes, on the other hand, seemed to be able to get shots at will, but the Sea Kings struggled early on to put them on cage. They led 2-0 after one quarter and 5-0 at halftime before finally opening things up and building a 9-0 lead entering the final period.
