It was a record setting night at Davidson Field as the Newport Harbor Boys Lacrosse Sailors (8-8, 6-2 Sunset League) won their 6th straight game in defeating the Edison Chargers (8-7, 1-6) by the score of 20-5, the most goals ever scored in a game in the 13 year history of the program. Senior Captain Kole Escher (5 goals, 2 assists) set a new season record of 52 goals scored for the season (eclipsing Zach Gagnon’s previous record of 49 goals scored in 2009). Escher is also the only player in the history of the program to have scored a goal in every game of a season (16 straight). Junior Alex Fuller (7 goals, 5 assists) set a new single game record of 12 points (eclipsing the 11 set by Tommy Hanrahan in 2009). Senior Captain Nathan Chaness (16 faceoffs won, 11 groundballs) set a new single game record for faceoffs won (surpassing 15 won by Cory Turner in 2009). Junior John Mooers had another strong game with 3 goals and a assist as did Senior Captain Chris Buchanan with 2 goals, an assist, and 6 groundballs. Senior Josh Ford contributed with four assists, while Senior Chas Beek scored twice in his first game back from a broken collarbone. Junior Nick Wood also scored a goal. Defensively, the Sailors were led by Juniors Blake Lenk (10 groundballs, 6 takeaways) and Liam Whelan (3 groundballs, 3 takeaways). Sophomore John Jasper was solid again in goal with 5 saves, and remains undefeated as a Varsity starter after a late season call up from the JV squad. The Sailors now await the decision of the playoff seeding committee to determine if their late season surge earns them their 6th straight playoff berth.
