Foothill High’s rush toward the playoffs hit some speed bumps Wednesday, but not many, as the Knights shook off a rough second quarter to beat Rancho Bernardo, 17-7, at Tustin Sports Park. Foothill (15-1) showcased its impressive bench depth in this game, and sent a message that Coach Foxed is blessed with plenty of young talent ready continue the Foothill tradition for the foreseeable future. Backup faceoff specialist, sophomore Sam Cron, was one of the game’s standouts, winning 9 of 10 faceoffs. Reigning Player of the Week, sophomore goalie Ryan Blank, stopped 13 shots in the first half. And 11 players scored at least one goal as Coach Jon Fox emptied his bench, without much of a drop-off in skill.
Rancho Bernardo, 6-10, took advantage of a three-minute penalty to cut a 6-0 deficit in half in the second quarter. But the game wasn’t close after that. Attack Nate Marano (Denver), coming off an eight-goal game last week, had three goals and a team-high four assists. Attack Kevin Kodzis (Holy Cross) also had three goals. Senior attack Nick Matzek, who has been steady all year, added two goals and three assists. Middie Warren Case, another season-long standout, scored twice. Seven other Knights had a goal apiece.
Rancho Bernardo’s Jacob Maldonado and Hunter So had three goals each. Tucker Reed added a score.
