Foothill defeated St. Margaret’s 9–6 on Wednesday night at Tustin Sports Park. The Tartans kept the score close all night coming back repeatedly throughout the night and refusing to let the Knights pull away. In the end the Knights used a balanced scoring attack and strong goaltending to notch its third victory of the season.
After Foothill opened the scoring 2-0 in the first quarter, St. Margaret’s knotted the score at two by the end of the first frame with a combination of strong defense and patient ball movement on offense. Foothill had a strong 2nd quarter scoring three unanswered goals to go up 5–2 at the half. The Tartans came back strong in the third quarter with two unanswered goals to draw within one of the Knights until Foothill scored a late third quarter goal to lead 7–5 at the end of the third . In the 4th quarter the Tartans again refused to give up scoring an additional goal to make it 7–6 before Foothill finished the scoring with two final goals to put an exclamation point on their win.
The Knights were led offensively by sophomore attackman Nate Marano’s 4 goals, while Cameron Stone added two goals and Warren Case, Nick Matzek and Tanner Jones each had one. Junior midfielder Ryan Falbo had three assists.
The Tartans were led offensively by junior midfielder Hunter Edington with 2 goals, while senior attackman Chase Williams, senior attackman Alex Waller, junior midfielder Josh Davis and freshman attackman Sam Harnish each had one goal.
Both teams played tight defense throughout the game. Senior LSM Brandon Suchand, sophomore defenseman John Connelly, and sophomore defenseman Fernando Delgado played strong games on defense for the Tartans neutralizing the Foothill’s talented faceoff man with smothering stick checks and collecting 13 groundballs for St. Margaret’s. Sophomore midfielder Austin Babb had 7 groundballs and junior defenseman Chris Skillman had 6 groundballs for the Knights.
Next up for St. Margaret’s is an away game against La Costa Canyon next Tuesday night. Foothill hosts Newport Harbor on Saturday.
