Eric Fries Sparks Corona del Mar

No. 1 Corona del Mar boys’ lacrosse began their defense of the Orange County championship with a 14-6 win over No. 11 Los Alamitos on Saturday.  The Sea Kings were led by Eric Fries who scored five goals and picked up four groundballs.

CdM opened up a 4-1 lead in the first quarter only to watch the dogged Griffins close the gap to 8-6 at the end of the third quarter.  With the outcome of the game in question, the CdM defense responded by shutting down Los Al in the fourth quarter while the CdM offense picked up steam to give the Sea Kings the 14-6 victory.

Nick Puglia’s 17/23 performance on faceoffs and 11 groundballs was key to the victory. In typical CdM fashion, scoring was well distributed.  Will Favreau and Ryan Meckler each recorded hat tricks. Sachin Gokhale (2g, 1a) and John Bethel (1g) completed the scoring.

Kyle Cord had three saves between the pipes.

Trenton Jones led the Los Al offense with three points (2g, 1a).  James Sparks, Collin Frazier, Zach Mais and Cash Lopez each scored one for the Griffins.  Matt Fanelli had an assist. Goalie Cullen Murray had eight saves.

Next up: CdM (1-0) plays no. 7 El Toro (1-1)  on March 14.  Los Al (1-2) hosts Chaminade (1-1) on Thursday and travels to Murrieta Mesa (2-0) on Saturday.
