Sophomore attack Cory Lund scored the go-ahead goal on an assist from senior middie Nolan Roles with 1:33 left Friday night, and El Segundo (12-4, 8-0) held off Culver City (7-10, 6-2) to win 12-11 and claim the Ocean League championship and an automatic berth in the upcoming US Lacrosse Southern Section playoffs.
Lund (5 goals, 2 assists) and Roles (4 goals, 1 assist) led the El Segundo offense, which also received contributions from senior John Lang (1g, 1a) and freshman Devin Bonney and sophomore Daniel Ball (1g each).
Culver City took a 7-3 lead in the first quarter of what was described as a physical game, but the Eagles came alive in the second and had tied it 9-9 by halftime. It was tied again 11-11 entering the fourth quarter and remained that way until Roles found Lund on the doorstep (pictured).
The El Segundo defense clearly settled down after that first quarter — with scrappy play from Kai Bucher, Cayman Barber, Nick Palley, Austin Thompson and Oliver Slee — allowing only four goals the rest of the way. Eagles senior goalie Jake Barone was credited with 12 saves.
“Both goalies were amazing,” Eagles coach Brooks Roscoe said. “They stood on their heads.”
