Eagles Upend Los Al

The Santa Margarita Eagles travelled to Los Alamitos’ new field and stadium on Friday night and came away with a 10-7 victory. With two starters injured, the Eagles’ scoring was more focused. Sophomore Logan Dochterman continued his method of scoring early and put the Eagles up 1-0. Doc was able to tally 4 points on the night with 3 goals and an assist. Hayden Ruiz followed with an unassisted left landed shot to make it 2-0, Eagles. Ruiz was the team’s leading scorer on the night with 2 goals and 3 assists. Sophomore Zach Taylor followed suit with his goal on an assist from Ruiz to make it 3-0, Eagles. Taylor had 2 goals and an assist on the night. Junior, Nico Houser’s dodge and left handed rip put the Eagles up 5-1. Nico later added his second goal on the night with a right handed shot on a precision pass in traffic from Ruiz. Ruiz’s consistent ability to make spectacular plays amazed the crowd. Eagle Sophomore, Billy Senecal, won the face off battle. With two minutes left in the game, the Eagles were up 10-5. However, the Griffins never gave up. Late goals by Los Alamitos standouts Brandon Ezell and Tyler Miller resulted in a much tighter game at the end.

The goalies from both teams made some good saves. Eagles’ goalie Max Vought had 11 saves on the night. Griffins goalie, Jackson Browner, was equally impressive with 15 saves on the night. The difference between the two defenses appeared to be turnovers. The Eagles caused the Griffins to turn the ball over 22 times. Sophomore Defensemen CJ Deal and Eric Rubak and senior Ravi Dhouni continued their physical ways and punished the Griffins a number of times to cause turnovers. On the flip side, the Eagles’ defenders did spend a lot of time in the penalty box with 8 penalties. The Eagles improved their record to 5-1. The Griffins dropped to 2-4.

Santa Margarita has a big week coming with home games coming up against Foothill and Rancho Bernardo on Wednesday and Friday. Things won’t be much easier for the Griffins who host Corona del Mar on Wednesday and surprising CIF newcomers Edison in a league match on Friday.
