Devo’s Weekly Wrapup

Great to see Torrey Pines’ Dewey Egan out there mixing it up out there against Foothill on Saturday.  Egan is a classy kid and a great talent who is committed to the University of North Carolina.  Most people expect to see a dodging machine when they see a UNC commit but high level guys like Egan can do it all.  He can dodge, shoot, feed, and I do believe he crushed someone on a ground ball with a big hit, looked like fun.  Also looked like three sticks went flying in the first quarter of that game.  That’s what it’s supposed to look like with two teams riding hard and causing turnovers.  Wasn’t high scoring but lots of action.

Bodie Jellerson, running with his brother Easton Ellerson,  does not look much like a freshman out there for Foothill.

Corona del Mar just put the hammer down on a good Santa Margarita team last week.  The Sea Kings were up 14-1 at the half and got the bench some playing time early in the second half.  They caught SMCHS on an off day and the final was 18-3.  14-1 means the game is over.  It’s still early in the season after the Covid break and the Sea Kings are balanced, improving and getting younger guys some runs vs lighting up the scoreboard. No real need to double up that 14-1 score with starters on to the final whistle.

Watch out for the Beacham brothers of La Costa Canyon.  Noah Beacham and Ben Beacham can ball.  Noah is an SSDM heading to Maryland and Ben is a top 2023 middie.  Don’t be surprised if Ben is off the board not long after September 1.  I am going to get to an LCC game soon.  Torrey won the last two CIF San Diego section titles for San Diego but I believe their last one before that was 2014.  LCC has seven CIF titles I believe, might be time for number eight.

Loyola is on a roll with wins over Mater Dei and Foothill.  The Cubs are looking like the team to beat in LA and maybe the Southern Section in Coach Borell’s second season at Loyola after the move from Palos Verdes.  The PV-Loyola rivalry game is one to watch to see how the programs have changed in just two years.

Servite vs Santa Margarita  should be a good one coming up.

Ryan Henry of Yorba Linda went 3 for 5 on faceoffs for UMass. The Minutemen got a late start with Covid but the freshman is making the most of it. UMass brand is toughness and Ryan fits the brand.  Watch out in 2022.

Rapper DMX passed away this week. If you’ve ever spent much time around game warms ups for HS or college lacrosse games  you’re gonna hear some DMX over that last 20 years.  You’ll also hear lots of talk around a lacrosse field, hype and self promotion.  On the subject of self promotion DMX had this to say: “if you’re heart was as big as your mouth you’d be real”. Lots of real ballers out there in 2021 and generally not the big talkers.

Fantastic finishes may keep coming in the 2021 season.
