Maxlax: Coach you sounded fired up for the weekends opening round games of NCAA tourney this week, sounds like you have some guys you know very well from training on defense or helping with recruiting services playing against each other out of SoCal. Who should we watch for?
DEVO: In the Drexel vs Notre Dame game, keep an eye out for CdM alum Brennan Greenwald of Drexel and Justin Cheng of Notre Dame. Brennan is having a big year at close D. They moved him from LSM last year and he put on 10 lbs and he was recently pointed out on a podcast by coach Volker. For ND LSM Justin Cheng is an LSM, he’s from Beckman High. Both guys honed their skills doing the same drills I do with the young players in SoCal now. Brennan jumped in for a session over the holidays, he’s so technically sound and had nice assist last week vs Hofstra. He can push transition from close D. Coach Durkin, the Drexel D coordinator has been very happy with Greenwald.
Bryant’s Aiden Goltz is a kid I intro’d to coach Pressler and it was just a great fit from day 1. Goltz, a freshman from Newport Harbor had 2 goals and 2 assists last week vs St Joe’s, and had 2 goals vs Hobart the week before. Coach Pressler mid season was very enthusiastic about 2nd half for Goltz and sounds like he was right. Cole Garvey from Mira Costa did lots of D training junior year into senior year to clean up his game to get recruited and was another guy I knew coach Pressler would like. Coach really liked that he has “uncanny ability to get ground balls”. Cole was out for sessions this summer and we thought he’d get run as Frosh and he has. He’s done well.
Same game Bobby Gavin from San Diego is a goalie for UVA. Coach Tiffany saw him play well several times and came in late to scoop him. Bobby is just a great kid and to help some in the recruiting and have him land with class act Lars Tiffany is a lacrosse thrill up there. Lars played at Lafayette HS is Syracuse NY where many of the great Native American players played and he coaches aggressive style of play. We interviewed him for Maxlax few months ago as well. Bobby started and won 2 games this year, his work ethic is to be respected, second to none.
Jordan Pakzad out of Corona del Mar also learned on the same drills we do with the boys now and he’s close D/LSM at Rutgers. Got some run this year and did great job with couple big match ups early in 2020 season so it’ll be match up dependent on where he’ll play.
That’s 6 guys in 3 games so it’s exciting times for the guys I’ve worked with and keep in touch with! They all found spots they are very happy at and a few will go to round 2 and likely someone will hit the final 4.
MaxLax: See any upsets this weekend?
Devo: Don’t sleep on Drexel. Brutal conference physically year in and year out and they seem to have continued to build momentum as the season has gone on. ND on a roll so not sure we get an upset but Dragons will bring the fire.
Other local guys also in these games include “KG” Kevin Groeninger is having another really good year for Bryant. The St Margs product started as a freshman last year and didn’t slow down this year. I think he was 2g and 2a vs St Joe’s past week. Quentin Buchman from Santa Margs got some runs at middie this year for ND. I believe he’s 2g’s and 2a’s on the year.
