And then there was one. Corona del Mar remained the last undefeated team standing by knocking off Foothill 16-13 in a shootout at Northrop Stadium on Saturday. CdM’s relentless ride and Jason Simaan’s (Brown) 24/30 (80 percent) faceoff performance proved to be the difference. Foothill’s snipers scored on 13 of the 16 shoots they put on frame, they just could not get enough opportunities to overcome the Sea Kings’ possession advantage.
CdM built up a 4-2 lead in first quarter, and Foothill could not catch up after that. The Sea Kings maintained the two goal advantage (7-5) at halftime before doubling the lead to 13-9 at the end of three quarters. Foothill fought to the end, closing the gap to 15-13 with 2:20 to play. However, Stephen Von Der Ahe (5 goals) scored on the ensuing faceoff to to squash the comeback attempt.
Jordan Greenhall’s quick feet posed matchup problems for Foothill all night long and his seven point (2 goals, 5 assists) and four groundballs led the CdM offense. Ryan Meckler added to Von Der Ahe’s five goals with a hat trick. Nate Neumann and Eric Fries chipped in with two goals. Sachin Gokhale (1g, 1a) and Will Favreau (1g, 1a) completed the CdM scoring. Jordan Pakzad (St. Joseph’s) led the defense with three groundballs and several clears at critical junctures.
