We got a chance to sit down with Coach Jon Fox of Foothill High School this week and what did we take away? He’s a pretty rad dude.
Where did you grow up?
Did you play lacrosse as a kid? Where?
No. We didn’t have the sport back then. So in high school I was a
North Section CIF champ in football and baseball.
Do you like to give inspirational speeches to your players before the game?
Not really. By game time were already ready. The speeches are for practice.
What have been the keys to your tremendous success at Foothill?
Consistency. Steady work. Building relationships with players and families. Building the community and letting them own Foothill lacrosse. Having great assistant coaches committed to the community. Having great booster presidents. Focus on fundamentals. Allowing players to play and have fun.
What style of play do you like to use?
Play to your strengths. Each year let the team experiment to find what they are good at and design offense and defense strategy that fits our current athletes, trying to match them up mentally and physically so they can have success and fun.
What is your favorite restaurant?
SoCal or NorCal, who has better lacrosse?
Pretty even but Southern Cal has the current edge.
Do you have any children that play lacrosse?
Yes 3 ballers: Luke 9, Maddie 11, Josh 13
What is your favorite movie?
“Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” and “Monty Python’s Search for the Holy Grail,” definitely up there, along with almost every 70’s & 80’s NFL films presents, and can I ever turn off “Remember the Titans” or “Miracle”? No way.
Denver or Duke?
Tough call as I really like Coach [John] Danowski’s coaching style, and everything he does with his program, but no question right now its Denver. The staff out there seems the friendliest to the West Coast kids, and [assistant] coach [Dylan] Sheridan goes out of his way to make sure the SoCal kids get seen and have the opportunity to play there if warranted. I like the style of offense they play, good fit for my players, and a high character coach with [Bill] Tierney is a win-win.
Would you say you are quiet on the sidelines or do you “use your voice”?
Depends on the situation, if I feel that I need to be heard then I’ll raise my voice, but overall I’m pretty even keeled, and won’t say too much.
What is one thing about you that most people do not know?
I’ve flown in the Good Year blimp.
If you had one game to play over from this past year which game would it be?
We have a few that could make this list but probably the one we want back the most is our game vs. Medfield, Mass.
A penguin walks through that door right now wearing a sombrero. What does he say and why is he here?
I’m from Dominican U. Come win a national title playing for Coach Webster.
Will Southern California lacrosse overtake East Coast lacrosse in quality of play some day?
Not likely. Too many generations of knowledge and play guiding the east coast. However, once we have many SoCal grandparents that have played lax, then we’ll see. The West Coast already has its own quality and style to lax that’s unique from the East, and when we see the Pac 12 go D1 then the scene will really blow up.
Thanks coach! Check out some Foothill Knights highlights from the 2013 season!
