CdM Upsets JSerra, 8-5

corona_del_mar_sea_kingTuesday night’s lacrosse game between Corona del Mar High School and JSerra tested the age old philosophical question “What happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object?” JSerra’s high-octane offense, led by the likes of Mitch Kingsley, James Yanes, and Brendan Lynch, entered the game averaging 13 goals per game against one of the most challenging schedules in California. Meanwhile, CdM, led by the junior quintet of LSM Brian Leguay, defenders Brett Greenlee, Hugh Crance, and Chad Redfearn, and goalie Hoyt Crance is allowing a Scrooge-like 4 goals per game. Physics tells us that that when an unstoppable force meets an irresistible object the two will pass right through one another without affecting one another, (yes, really. MaxLaxOC.com, the only website with free lax news and physics tutoring!) but those of us who know these two teams know that there would too much pride, too much passion, and too much talent on the field for that outcome.

The game started out looking like the unstoppable force would move the immovable object all the way to Oregon as JSerra jumped out to a 3-0 lead on goals from Yuta Murata, Jake Schleppy, and Yanes (assist from Kingsley) in the first six minutes of the game.

JSerra was in control of the pace and seemingly the game until penalties and Nino Chavez turned the momentum dial in the other direction. Chavez (3 goals) finished off a feed from Ben Palitz (4 assists) on an EMO to initiate a CdM three goal-surge in the final four minutes of the quarter. Sherwin Gersten followed by capitalizing on another EMO, and Chavez scored again to give CdM their first quarter scoring. Matt Karzak interrupted the CdM run when he put a Kingsley pass past Hoyt Crance to make it 4-3 in favor of JSerra heading into the second quarter.

By now Leguay (3 caused turnovers and 2 ground balls) and company were in lockdown mode on defense, Jason Simaan was controlling face-offs (12 of 15), and the immovable object was winning the battle. Shockingly, JSerra could muster only one goal in the final three quarters. Austin Shackelford scored on an EMO early in the second quarter to put the Lions up 5-3 before Stephen Von der Ahe scored the first of his two goals to make it 5-4 at half time and start a run of five unanswered CdM goals.

Jay Damon tied it up for CDM in the third and Simaan found the back of the net to give CdM their first lead and the score was 6-5 heading into the final quarter. In the final frame, Chavez completed his hat trick and Von Der Ahe scored his second to reach the final score of 8-5.

The Sea Kings are now 9-1 heading into the final weeks of the season. They play Sage Hill on Friday. JSerra (12-2) will get ready to battle with San Diego powers La Costa Canyon and Cathedral next week.
