CdM Streak Continues

corona_del_mar_sea_king It’s that time of the season when the cream starts to rise to the top; when the contenders and the pretenders start to separate. CdM certainly looks like a contender today after its 15 -2 drubbing of Santa Margarita.

The game started out at a somewhat sluggish pace as both teams seemed to have trouble in the transition game in the early going. At 7:33 of the first quarter the names Casey Mix and Jack Ortlieb were announced over the PA system for the first time when Ortlieb finished a pass from Mix to put the Sea Kings up 1-0. Those two names may have given the PA announcer laryngitis by the time the final whistle blew. Ortlieb finished the game with 5 goals and 4 assists; Mix has 4 goals and 4 assists. Numbers that make a nice season for a lot of players.

Hayden Ruiz tied the game at 1-1, when he wrapped around from X about 5 minutes later. The game remained tied until about midway through the second quarter when Ortlieb and Mix combined again, this time on a failed clear. The Sea Kings capitalized on two more turnovers and a manup situation to make it 5-1 at halftime. ollowing Thursday night’s rally against Tesoro, the Eagles faithful were feeling pretty good about things at this point.

The comeback was not to be on this day though. Mix scored less than 20 seconds into the second half and the route was on. The score would be 12-1 before Skyler Rockey scored the next and final Santa Margarita goal. By this time CdM was giving most of their starters a rest, and still the Sea Kings scored three more goals to end the game at 15-2. Also scoring for the Sea Kings were Todd Kitzens (3 goals), Brett Nelson (1 goals), Sherwin Gersten (1 goals), Chris Von der Ahe (1 assist), and Noah Howe (1 assist). Hoyt Crance finished the game with 8 saves. The Eagles put a lot balls on the ground and the Sea Kings took advantage as Chad Redfern had 6 groundballs and Von der Ahe and Hugh Crance had 4 apiece.

Next up for the Santa Margarita (4-3) is the team currently ranked #1 by, Palos Verde. The 4-0 Sea Kings take their 28 game win streak to Colorado for a game agains Fort Collins Unified.
