CdM Stays Unbeaten, Tops SC

corona_del_mar_sea_kingThe still-undefeated Sea Kings held off San Clemente’s challenge, scoring three unanswered goals to snap a 6-6 tie in the fourth quarter and win, 9-6 in a game played at Corona del Mar HS. CdM is now 6-0, while San Clemente suffers its second straight loss and falls to 5-3.

The Tritons opened the scoring when junior middie Austin Lickley dodged up top and sent a shot into the upper shelf for a quick 1-0 lead. CdM answered quickly as Chris Von Der Ahe beat SC keeper Thomas Ahola and tied it 1-1. CdM’s senior star attackman Jack Ortlieb then took over the game, scoring a pair to close out the quarter while SC’s Torin Alm helped trim the score to 3-2. Ortlieb added his third (assisted by Casey Mix) before San Clemente’s Jordan Riggs (assist Collin Zines) and Peyton Garrett’s ripper from outside (assist Jack Renard) sent the game to halftime tied 4-4.

The battle continued in the second half, as Ortlieb ripped his 4th tally of the game under heavy pressure by SC’s Stone Sims, and Mix scored on a extra-man opportunity. But SC’s Austin Streeter scored on a nice inside roll dodge to trim to 6-5, then Garrett added his second on extra-man to tie the game at 6-6 early in the fourth quarter.

CdM then methodically edged away, scoring three–Chase McElroy, Brett Nelson and Max Kline–to ensure the victory and keep their remarkable unbeaten run of 30 games intact.

Both goalies were terrific in their respective nets: CdM’s Hoyt Crance had 10 saves while facing 31 shots, and San Clemente Thomas Ahola had 11 saves while facing 30 CdM shots.
