CdM Girls Lacrosse Pulls Off Only First Round Upset

The No. 9 Corona del Mar girls lacrosse continued their late-season surge by defeating No. 8 Tesoro 12-8 on Tuesday in Round 1 of the Southern Section Girls Lacrosse Championships.  CdM, the only lower seed in the bracket to advance to the second round, won six of their last seven regular season games.

Unselfish offense was the key to the Sea Queens’ victory.  Seven different goal-scorers put point on the board for CdM and 9 of the 12 goals came off of assists. Jensen Coop (3 goals, 1 assist) and Kennedy Mulvaney (1 goal, 4 assists) led all scorers.  Caroline Brewster had three points (2g, 1a).  Emily Fauldy ( 2g), Ellery Amdor (1g, 1a), Maria LaBruna (2g), and Joslyn Simaan (1g, 1a) all chipped in with two points.  Ashley Olson had 10 saves between the pipes.

Alexa Catanzariti led the Titans with seven points (6g, 1a).  Katelin Martinez (2g, 1a) scored the other two Tesor goals.  Ava Ferrara had an assist.  Goalie Leah Olsen had 11 saves.

The Sea Queens will now play No. 1 Mater Dei in the second round on Thursday as they try to make it to the County semi-finals for the third time in the last four years.
