Reigning champs Corona del Mar extended their win streak to 27 games with a 13-6 win over a rapidly improving Beckman team. CdM came out strong but Beckman was not intimidated and was anxious to show that they are ready to compete in the upper echelons of OC Lacrosse. The first period ended 3-2 in favor of the Sea Kings with Seniors Brett Nelson (3 g), Casey Mix (4g, 3a) and Jack Ortlieb (3g, 1a) scored for the Sea Kings. In the second period, the trio of Mix, Nelson, and Ortlieb continued to give the Patriots trouble as the Sea Kings opened up a 7-3 half time lead. Mix scored twice, Nelson once and Ortlieb once on man-up in the quarter.
Beckman came out firing after halftime and narrowed CdM’s lead to 8-5 after three quarters. Sr. Chris Von Der Ah scored the lone CdM goal in the quarter. The fourth quarter was al Cdm as the Sea Kings put the game our of reach with goals from Ortlieb, Mix, sophomore Sherwin Gersten (1g, 1a), Nelson, and sophomore Ben Palitz.
Trevor Keane led the Patriots with 3 goals and 2 assists. Wesley Filipe (1g, 1a), Alex Knox (1g) and Frank Heng (1g) rounded out the scoring for Beckman. Beckman goalie Matt Allen was outstanding with 11 saves and CDM goalie Hoyt Crance made a difference with 11 saves also. Defensively CDM was led by sophomoree Hugh Crance with 5 groundballs and numerous turnovers.
CdM brings their 3-0 record to Santa Margarita for a showdown with the Eagles on Saturday. The 2-2 Patriots face Irvine on Monday.
