The last game of the US Lacrosse-Orange County semi-final extravaganza on Saturday featured a duel between Foothill’s depth and J Serra’s athleticism. Foothill’s depth was perhaps never more evident this season than it was on Saturday night. Matt Harris‘s five points (four goals, 1 assist) led a parade of nine Knights who found twine. That performance though was not enough to offset the show put on by J Serra’s six senior captains. Four goals apiece from Jake Schleppy, Yuta Murata, and James Yanes, 1 goal from Logan Olmsted and outstanding defensive performances by Nick Georgagi and Kennedy Solomon led the Lions to a 14-13 overtime victory and a trip back to the Division Championship game. Not to be overlooked was a goal from junior John Karzak. Senior goalie Beau Largent had 11 saves. Unsung seniors LSM Joey Luna, d-middie Jackson Russell, and defenseman Matt Saad and the Inman Twins, Jim and Steve, made their usual vital contributions that do not show up on the stat sheets.
Down 6-4 at halftime, J Serra’s offense came to life in the second half with nine goals to send the game into overtime. The Lions ended up with possession after a mad scramble off the overtime faceoff and immediately called timeout. Schleppy cleared from midfield after the timeout and set up J Serra’s offense. After the Lions spun the ball around the horn a couple times, Schleppy took over and this was the result:
In addition to Harris’ big night, Kevin Kodzis (1g, a), Nate Marano (2g), Nathan Skeen (1g), Rafael Fernandez (1g), Ellis Geis (1g), Matt Marano (1g, 1a), Chris Reem (1g), and Cole Falbo (1g) scored for the Knights.
Foothill finishes the season with a 20-2 record. J Serra has a rematch with St. Margaret’s on Wednesday night.
