Capo Takes Down Laguna Hills

Capo.jpgBuilding on the momentum from their thrilling overtime win earlier in the week,  the Capistrano Valley High School Cougars continued their late season surge by beating Laguna Hills High School 11-4 on Thursday. The Cougars have now won six of their last eight games.

Brad McCarville got Capo Valley started with an early goal.  Cameron Lopez, Carter Bache and Sam Slobom quickly followed with goals of their own to give Capo a 4-0 lead heading into the second quarter.  Early faceoff domination by Trevor Kist (6 gbs, 15/16 faceoffs) that continued throughout the game allowed the Capos to control possession and the pace of the game.

Laguna Hills kept themselves in the game with solid defense that shutout Capo in the 2nd quarter while Michael Covel chipped away at the Capo lead with 2 goals to make it 4-2 at halftime.

With the memory of nearly letting the game Chaparral earlier in the week still fresh in their minds.  The Cougars played with a vengeance in the third quarter.  McCarville scored a man up goal while Laguna Hills was down 3 men, to get Capo started in a 5 goal 3rd quarter. Lopez dodge through the Hawk defense. Webb rifled a goal from 15 yards out. Tyler Braithwaite dodged from the top to sneak one past Jordan Wanger for the Hawks and interrupt the Capo run. Blake Berk got one right back for Capo though when he scored on nice two man play from X with Slobom.   Bache added his second to put Capo up 9-3 at the end of the 3rd.

Covel gave the Hawks a glimmer of hope when he completed his hat trick on a man-up play to start the fourth quarter, but Berk answered with a quick dodge from X.  McCarville got his hat trick on a man-up goal on a skip pass from Lopez to end the game at 11-4 in favor of Capo.

Capo (7-5) finishes out the regular season with games against San Juan Hills on Tuesday and Aliso Niguel on Thursday. A win on Tuesday guarantees them a winning record in 2014. The Hawks wrap up the season by playing Aliso Niguel on Monday and San Juan Hills on Thursday.
