Capistrano Valley High School used a strong second half to close out a 9-4 win over Laguna Hills High School on Tuesday night. Goals by Tyler Braithwaite and Michael Covel gave Laguna Hills a 2-1 lead early in the second quarter before Capo scored five straight goals in an eight minute stretch that began with three minutes left in the half and extended into the third quarter to open up a 6-2 lead. Blake Berk led the Capo surge with 2 unassisted goals. Drew Casas (assist Berk), Parker Webb, and Carter Bache provided the other three goals.
After Laguna Hills closed the gap to 6-3, Capo pulled away by opening the fourth quarter with three unanswered goals from Brad McCarville (assist Sam Slobom), Berk on a nice dodge from X, and Bache (assist Berk). Strong defense led by Jerecho Fischbeck, Eric Thiercof, Lucas Moreno, and Michael Brunette along with solid goalie play by freshman Jordan Wanger frustrated the Hawks’ offense, holding them to only one goal per quarter.
Sophomore Gage Hogan had 7 saves between the pipes for the Hawks, and LSM Will Henretta scooped up 5 ground balls in a solid effort.
Capo improved to 4-3 overall and 2-0 in league play with the win. They visit San Juan Hills on Thursday. Laguna Hills falls to 0-7 as they get ready to host Yorba Linda.
