Starting this afternoon and continuing through tomorrow, fans of Orange County high school lacrosse will be treated to perhaps the most intriguing lineup of games this season. The games will stretch from Coronado Island to Santa Ana, and involve 10 teams from Maryland to California. Seven of these teams are still undefeated; by Saturday evening at least three of them will no longer be sporting a goose egg in the loss column. As the best sportscaster of all time, Keith Jackson, used to say, Whoa Nelly!
So here’s the plan. Leave work early today to catch the St. Margaret’s – Mt. St. Joe’s in San Juan Capistrano at 4:00. Then head over to Tesoro to watch them play Bishop’s at 6:00. Tell the ref to play running time so you can catch the last three quarters of San Clemente – CdM. Sleep in tomorrow. Show up at Foothill at 2:00 to watch them play Torrey Pines. Or… you can just stay up to date with CJ on Twitter or our live front-page Twitter feed.
Here is your guide to the weekend action:
Mount St. Joseph (MD) at St. Margaret’s. Friday, 4:00 pm
The top-ranked Tartans are continuing right where they left off last year. They are 3-0 and have outscored the competition 41-10. Mt. St. Joe’s enters the contest with a 4-0 record by virtue of winning 3 games back home in Maryland and handing Mater Dei their first loss of the season last night.
Corona del Mar at San Clemente. Friday, 7:00 pm
From a local perspective, this is probably the most interesting game of the weekend. As the season progresses, it looks like the Top 5 teams in Orange County may be forming their own peloton and separating from the pack. Tonight will be the first time two of those five teams. Home team San Clemente (5-0) will look to avenge last year’s 9-6 loss to Corona del Mar (3-0). When the final whistle blows Orange County will have one less undefeated team.
Torrey Pines at Foothill. Saturday, 2:00 pm
From a regional, and maybe even national perspective, this may be the most intriguing game of the weekend. Undefeated Foothill will host the undefeated defending San Diego CIF champions, Torrey Pines Falcons (4-0). The local teams have have fared well thus far against outside competition. This should be the biggest challenge yet. As with the SC v CdM game, only one team will be left undefeated when the final whistle blows.
JSerra at Coronado. Friday, 7:00 pm
JSerra is 5-0 and 4-0 against teams outside the OC. Having knocked off Bishop’s School earlier in the week, and with games against Torrey Pines and La Costa Canyon looming on the horizon, Mitch Kingsley and his Pride are looking to make a statement against traditional San Diego power, Coronado.
Bishop’s at Tesoro. Friday, 6:00 pm
Knocking on the Top 5 door, is 4-1 Tesoro. They will host 0-1 but highly regarded Bishop’s School tonight. This should be a good one. The Titans will be looking to show they are ready for Top 5 consideration. Bishop’s will be looking to avenge their loss to JSerra earlier and earn their first W of the season.
