#BGT. It’s Big Game Thursday here in the OC. There is little more than a week of regular season play left and the playoff picture is anything but settled. Last night No. 2 Corona del Mar and No. 3 St. Margaret’s had their turn in a potential semi-final preview. If you weren’t there you should have been because it was one of the best boys’ lacrosse games played in the OC this year. There are at least five games tonight that have the potential to match last night’s intensity and drama. We’ve got a 4 vs. 5, a 9 vs. 10, a 6 vs. 8, a 17 vs. 18, and a 7 vs. 20 to choose from. Here’s a viewer’s guide to tonight’s action.
Who: No. 4 J Serra (10-4) vs No. 5 Santa Margarita (10-4)
Where: J Serra
When: 6:00 PM
What’s at Stake? J Serra likely wins the Trinity League with a win tonight. Santa Margarita likely shares first place with J Serra if they win. Whatever happens this could very well be a quarterfinals preview.
Background: The Lions ended March undefeated after beating the Eagles 12-11 on March 31. They are only 3-4 since. Santa Margarita is 4-1 in April with their only loss coming to No. 1 Foothill. Freshman Quentin Buchman is on fire for the Eagles. Last time the Eagles beat the Lions? April 25, 2012.
Who: No. 10 Great Oak (8-7) vs No. 9 Tesoro (5-9)
When: 6:30 PM
What’s at Stake? Three tenths of a point separates 10-12 in coaches poll. Both teams want to separate from that quagmire.
Background: This game will be physical. Both team like to play fast and hard. Tesoro has won their last two. Great Oak has lost six of their last seven.
Who: No. 8 Aliso (8-6: 3-3) vs No. 6 San Clemente (6-7; 3-2)
Where: San Clemente
When: 7:30 PM
What’s at Stake? Aliso can move into a tie for second place with a win. San Clemente has been hanging on to the No. 6 spot for weeks. A loss tonight may open the door for both Aliso and Trabuco Hills to pass them.
Background: The Tritons are 4-1 since dropping round 1 to the Wolverines on March 31. Aliso has dropped their last two, both were league games.
Who: No. 18 Servite (4–9: 0-3) vs No.17 Mater Dei (5-9; 1-3)
When: 3:00 PM
What’s at Stake? The winner may be able to jump into the final playoff spot. No. 16 Yorba Linda will probably be the Century League’s AQ. So as things stand today, this would require a jump into No. 15.
Background: Both teams have lost their last four games.
Who: No.7 Trabuco Hills (12-2; 5-1) vs No.20 Capistrano Valley (0-5; 3-9)
Where: Trabuco Hills
When: 5:30 PM
What’s at Stake? Capo has a season-making win if they pull off the upset. An upset would not help Trabuco with the final coaches poll of the season so close.
