NCAA Roundup – Andrew Tien Stays Hot for Air Force

The NCAA lacrosse season rolled into week 2. San Diego alums continued to impress at the top levels of the game.

One week after defeating Duke, Air Force could not repeat the magic with another upset over a Top 10 team.  Air Force fell to No. 3 Denver 14-6. Junior attack Andrew Tien (Bishop’s ’14) had two goals and an assist for the Falcons. Tien tallied two goals against Duke last week.

Vicki Porter (Poway ’13) netted a hat trick in San Diego State’s 11-9 loss to Oregon. Porter now has five goals in two games.

Bucknell scored four consecutive goals, the last with only 11 seconds left to defeat Bryant 9-8. In the losing effort for the Bulldogs, junior Cam Ziegler (La Costa Canyon ’14) had a goal and an assist, and senior Ryan Sharpe (Poway ’13) had an assist. Senior Kyle Mummau (La Costa Canyon ’13) and freshman Jake Fiske (Poway ’16) each was credited with two ground balls.

UMBC suffered a 15-5 loss to John’s Hopkins, but San Diego native Jason Brewster (Valley Center ’15) went 2-of-6 at the face-off dot and one ground ball and one caused turnover for the Retrievers.

Tristan Ruh (Pacific Ridge ’15) had one assist to help Boston University roll over UMass Lowell 18-8.

Kyleigh Westgarth(La Costa Canyon ’13) scored a goal in Fresno State’s season-opening 15-12 win over LIU Brooklyn.

Calen Ketcham had a goal and an assist to help Colorado Mesa defeat Whittier 9-7.  Evan Price (Grossmont, ’16) and Chris Burley (Scripps Ranch, ’15) each scored a goal for Whittier.  Max Thiele (Bishop’s “14), Nick Angileri (San Jose, Calif.), and Alex Hernandez (Grossmont, ’13) combined for 10 caused turnovers. Freshman Cooper Champagne (Grossmont, ’16) was 4-15 on faceoffs, while Kevin O’Donnell (Pacific Ridge, ’14) was 2-4.
