Competition for the South Coast League title just got very interesting.
In a shootout at Aliso Viejo Tuesday night, the 9th-ranked Aliso Niguel Wolverines knocked off the 6th-ranked San Clemente Tritons. The SCL now has three teams with 1-1 records.
It was a wild race to the finish. Aliso was able to pull ahead by three goals at three different times, and once by four. The Tritons responded, pulling even once, and within one goal four times.
With 3:44 left and SC with a two-man advantage, it looked like the Tritons would take the fight to the finish. But a complete comeback was not to be, as the Wolverines held on for a 14 – 11 win.
The high-flying Aliso offense was led by Jonah Rinaldi with five goals. Midfielder Garrett Hoang added four scores. Matt Jones notched three goals while Michael Marino and Jeremy Traub scored once each.
San Clemente hosts Capo Valley Friday night in another SCL matchup. Aliso visits St. Margaret’s on Thursday for a tough non-league matchup.
