Aliso Upsets San Clemente

Competition for the South Coast League title just got very interesting.

In a shootout at Aliso Viejo Tuesday night, the 9th-ranked Aliso Niguel Wolverines knocked off the 6th-ranked San Clemente Tritons. The SCL now has three teams with 1-1 records.

The Tritons came out firing, with (US Merchant Marine Academy) scoring in the opening seconds. On the next possession, Renard fed a nifty assist to to put SC up by two.

The Woverines stormed back, taking the lead just before the half on goals by , and .

It was a wild race to the finish. Aliso was able to pull ahead by three goals at three different times, and once by four. The Tritons responded, pulling even once, and within one goal four times.

With 3:44 left and SC with a two-man advantage, it looked like the Tritons would take the fight to the finish. But a complete comeback was not to be, as the Wolverines held on for a 14 – 11 win.

The high-flying Aliso offense was led by with five goals. Midfielder Garrett Hoang added four scores. notched three goals while and scored once each.

Renard led SC with three scores. Howren, Garrett Eslick, and each scored twice for the Tritons.

San Clemente hosts Capo Valley Friday night in another SCL matchup. Aliso visits St. Margaret’s on Thursday for a tough non-league matchup.
