The Aliso Niguel boys lacrosse team sprung out to an early 3-0 lead against Dana Hills on Tuesday and then fought off repeated comeback attempts to take an 11-10 victory. The Wolverines and Dolphins are two of the early favorites in the Sea View League race, and the head-to-head win could pay dividends for the Wolverines come April.
The game was tightly contested throughout. The Wolverines scored the first three goals of the game within about five minutes. The Dolphins struck back with Tyler Hubbard (5g 2a) and Luke Perry (3g 1a) putting in goals to end the first quarter at 3-2 Aliso.
The Wolverines took back the momentum in Q2 and entered the intermission with a 6-3 lead. However, Q3 was dominated by Dana Hills and the game entered the fourth quarter with the two teams tied 8-8.
The Wolverines were able to get out to an 11-9 in the fourth quarter. The Dolphin defense led by junior Ethan Detels kept the score close, and with about two minutes left to play the Dolphins scored again to make it 11-10. Aliso gained possession, managed the ball well, and ran out the clock and get the W.
Stay tuned for the sequel on April 18 when the Dolphins and Wolverines faceoff again. A league championship and an automatic bid to the playoffs could be on the line.
Sean Ibarra and Carson Poremba led the Wolverines with four points each. Tommy Walsh and Max Horowitz each had two points.
