Dominican University of California announced in a press release that junior Dylan Acevedo, (Mater Dei High School, 2011) will be one of four Penguins co-captains for the upcoming 2014 season. Acevedo will be stepping into a vacancy created by the graduation of another former OC high school star, Cam Evanghelo (Tesoro, 2010).
To become a Penguins captain, players must nominate themselves and demonstrate the desire to be a leader, both on and off the field. They are then selected through a vote by their teammates. Head Coach Ned Webster said of Acevdo, “The first time I saw Dylan play lacrosse, the one quality that was most obvious is his intense desire to compete. Although he’s easy going by nature and leads the team prayer before practices and games, when Dylan is fired up, look out. The guy is like a powder keg.”
Acevedo played a starring role on a 2013 Penguins team that had the best season in the program’s history. The Penguins finished the season with an 8-5 record and won the Western Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association title for the first time. Acevedo was named to the Capital One Academic All-District Men’s At-Large NCAA Division II District 8 Team, played in 12 games including 10 starts, and won 99 of 177 faceoffs. His .560 winning percentage is currently 16th among all players in NCAA Division II. Acevedo scooped up a team-best 53 groundballs and was 28th in the nation in groundballs per game (4.42). He was named First Team All-WILA as defensive midfielder/faceoff specialist.
Acevedo’s Penguin teammates will include junior Ian Nickel (Mission Viejo High School, 2011), sophomore Alex Keuillian (Foothill High School, 2012), and sophomore Jake Craycraft (El Toro High School, 2012).
