Big game out in Yorba Linda last night with two of the hottest defenses and goalies in Orange County going toe-toe. Neither Yorba Linda nor Tesoro has given up double digit goals in a game yet this season. The Mustangs entered the game giving up just six goals per game while Tesoro had been even stingier, allowing just four goals per game.
The game played out true to form. Tesoro came in riding the momentum of a win over Corona del Mar but the Mustangs were not intimidated. A couple of very hot goalies kept the score low and the game close. Yorba Linda’s Hunter Platt had 15 saves vs 5 goals for smoking .750 save percentage to lead the Mustangs to a 7-5 win. Meanwhile Tesoro’s Jackson Brady was not far behind Platt with 15 saves of his own vs 7 goals.
Yorba Linda got on the board first when Matt Burnette hit Tyler Bohlinger for an eight yard shot and it was 1-0 early. A minute after that Cole Pollard scooped up a rebound and put it away to even the score. Charlie Richardson got topside next for Tesoro and scored unassisted to give Tesora a 2-1 edge. Richardson had a big game against CdM and didn’t slow down last night with one goal and two assists. factoring in three of the five Tesoro goals.
Bohlinger scored his second of the night, courtesy of a nice feed from Blake Hardison, to knot the game at deuces.Hardison was just getting started. He had three goals and one assist on the night. Hardison has done quite well this season. He typically draws the opponent’s top pole, but he still gets done. He had Nick Sheremetta, who is one of only two D1 defensive commits in OC, covering him against Servite. Hardison also faced one of the top D3 commits in OC in Kai Solomon when the Mustangs played Santa Margarita. Shermetta caught fire in the second half of that sparking a big comeback that just fell short.
Hardison scored man up on an assist from Brock Melanson to start the third quarter and Melanson scored unassisted after that to make it 4-2 in favor of the Mustangs. Yorba Linda continued to roll when Lucas Demogines scored on a feed from Hardison and it looked like Yorba Linda was going to just roll. However, the Titans still had plenty of fight left.
Late in the third quarter Tesoro got two quick ones in the last minute and a half. Ryan Tabor scored on a Richardson feed and Cole Pollard tallied again for the Titans to make it 5-4 with 12 minutes left to play.
Back to back Hardison goals made it 7-4 YL, while Richardson cut it to 7-5 on an unassisted goal to make it 7-5 final.
Two very well coached teams on display in this game. Both coaches are Long Island natives, so these teams you can expect to play hard every time they take the field. On defense Nate Warren continues to have a big year for Tesoro. He plays hard and very productive output for the ‘22. Trevor Krause continued his outstanding play for the Mustangs. He’s one of the best in OC no doubt. Both goalies were very hot, rarely do you get to see two catch fire on the same night, this was a fun game to watch. Platt was simply outstanding and Brady with back to back 15 save games is a thriller out there for sure.
Tesoro (3-2) travels to Newport Harbor on April 10. The Mustangs (3-1) host Santiago on April 7.
