California Ducks Elite (Pool A)

Who are These Guys?

The California Ducks are based in the Mission Viejo/South Orange County area.  They have youth through high school teams.  Many of the Ducks attend or will soon attend Mission Viejo High School, Capo Valley, and El Toro High School. Overall the Ducks stick by the team’s philosophy that winning only matters if you’re having fun, so success on the scoreboard is just a perk for the boys in Purple because we no doubt will be out there living it up on the field.

Coach JR Grubert says of his High School Elite Team “We expect to come out and be one of the best defensive teams at the tournament. With Roman, Collins, Young leading the charge and Kelly Petro and Jacob Shiflett switching off in the cage, the Ducks will make it a challenge for other teams to get on the board.  As for offense, we have big boy Matt Karzak and lefty Emerson Roth that will likely lead the charge on offense. Nick Melin and Tommy Ferguson coming down from Esperanza to help as well at the midfield as two way midfielders to lead the charge between boxes.”

How are They Doing This Year?

The PLF is the first tournament of the Year for the Ducks.

Players to Watch

Matt Karzak –  Attack – JSerra Class of 2016
Karzak is coming off his first full season playing for JSerra and was quite a force to be reckoned with during the HS season. He is looking to build off a successful season with JSerra helping take them to the CIF Finals and continue his dominate crease play this summer. Over 6’4” tall, he will be a difficult player to cover for most defensemen this summer.

Tyler Collins – Defense/Attack – El Toro Class of 2017
Collins, like Karzak, is a very large physical specimen. Collins brings great footwork, physical play and devastating checks to the table when he is on the defensive end of the field.  His athleticism gives him the versatility to pick up a short stick and also play attack. On offense he is a great shooter and will be a challenge to cover when paired with Matt Karzak down low.

Blake Young – Defense – El Toro Class of 2017
Blake is an Original Duck dating all the way back to the  Fall of 2013 in the Las Vegas Showcase. He is a strong leader on the field with no lack of confidence. His leadership and athleticism will make life difficult for opposing attackmen.

Kelly Petro – Goalie – Mission Viejo Class of 2018Coming off an outstanding freshman campaign at Mission Viejo,  Petro looks to up his game this summer playing against elite competition. The Ducks’ coaching staff thinks Kelly can be one off the best young goalies around.

CJ Roman – Defense – Mission Viejo Class of 2017
Roman with great size and athleticism is capable of playing close defense as well as LSM. His physicality as well as athleticism in the open field to help in the clearing game will be something to watch.
