Gavin Gerbershagen, Nick Whitall Shine in Arizona

3d Rising’s Casey Vock was impressed by the play of Gavin Gerbershagen and Nick Whitall at the 3d Blue Chip West Regional Camp in Phoenix in January. Gerbershagen is a sophomore attack at Capo Valley. Whitall is a freshman attack at Linfield Christian.

Over 400 players from around the west attended the event that serves as both a training program and a feeder program to the prestigious Jake Reed Nike Blue Chip Camp held each summer in Maryland. Strong performances at the Regional Camp can earn players an invitation to the summer Blue Chip camp.

Vock is careful to emphasize that his evaluation is “SEPARATE from the evaluation and selection process at the 3d Blue Chip camp. Being highlighted by does not indicate that a player has or has not been selected to attend the Jake Reed Nike Blue Chip Camp.”

Gerbershagen’s versatility helped him stand out from the crowd of talented lacrosse players.  “Gerbershagen showed well at the 3d Blue Chip West Regional Camp as a right-handed attackman with a well-rounded overall game. He’s smaller in size but shined in a number of ways for his skill. He was sneaky and opportunistic off the ball. He hustled with and without the ball. He carried it with his head up and showed field awareness and directed the offense. He took a defender one-on-one to the rack, finishing a nice, quick inside roll. Gerbershagen played unselfish lacrosse and impressed throughout the weekend.”

Whitall got noticed for his aggressive dodging and finishing abilities. “Whittall showed himself at 3d Blue Chip West to be a hard-dodging X attackman who can really push hard and make accurate feeds while trying to get a step. He can get up the field quickly and challenge to get topside. He turned the corner and finished shots with good placement. He was able to bounce off a defender and get another angle on the dodge and keep challenging. He threw numerous accurate passes off of hard dodges. Watching Whittall in one game, he dodged at full speed and pumped the ball to a cutter for an assist twice in short time. He sees the field and makes decisions quickly with the ball.”
